GARFIELD, NJ POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Garfield Police Department is located at 411 Midland Ave., Garfield, NJ 07026. The department currently employs 63 sworn officers: 1 Chief, 4 Captains, 4 Lieutenants, 11 Sergeants, 10 Detectives, and 33 patrol officers. The department also currently employs 16 Public Safety Telecommunicators (PSTs) and 2 Records Room clerks. The City of Garfield which is bordered by Elmwood Park, Saddle Book, Lodi, South Hackensack, Wallington, Passaic, and Clifton is a very diverse community. This comes with a lot of challenges. Some of these challenges include language and cultural differences. In order to accommodate the community, Garfield has hired bilingual officers and PSTs. Currently spread throughout the shifts are officers and PSTs that speak Polish, Spanish, French, Italian and Croatian. To date, the police department itself is culturally diverse which helps the city. The Garfield Police Department is its own Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), answering its own 9-1-1 calls and dispatches for Police, Fire, and EMS.

to be sensitive to the needs of the community.

 

ABOUT GARFIELD, NEW JERSEY

The area of Garfield is 1,333 acres or 2.08 square miles with an elevation from 10 to 160 feet. The City has more than 20 places of worship, a YMCA, a Boys and Girls Club, City Recreation Center, Senior Citizens Center, Health Center, Public Library, five volunteer Fire Companies and ambulance services provided by Hackensack University Medical Center, which stations ambulances right in the City of Garfield.

Garfield is twelve miles west of New York City, ten miles north of Newark, four miles south of Paterson and across the river from Passaic and Clifton. The 2010 United States census counted 30,487 people, 11,073 households, and 7,718 families in the city. The population density was 14,524.8 per square mile (5,608.1/km2). There were 11,788 housing units at an average density of 5,616.1 per square mile (2,168.4/km2). The racial makeup was 76.73% (23,393) White, 6.50% (1,981) Black or African American, 0.43% (132) Native American, 2.22% (678) Asian, 0.01% (2) Pacific Islander, 10.85% (3,307) from other races, and 3.26% (994) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 32.24% (9,830) of the population. The Census Bureau's 2006–2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $51,407 (with a margin of error of +/- $1,842) and the median family income was $56,701 (+/- $5,020).
