*Must be a full-time, sworn police officer, who has completed a state-certified police academy and has completed at minimum 1-year with your current agency, OR holds a valid POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certificate, OR you are within 3 years of the date of separation from your last law enforcement agency.
**Military Police. Federal Law Enforcement or Security Forces training is not considered POST Certified Training*
NATURE OF WORK:
Responsibility for providing law enforcement services by conducting field patrols of an assigned area of the city. Work is performed under the general direction of a Police Lieutenant, Sergeant, or other supervisory employee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK (May not include all duties performed):
- Patrols assigned areas to observe, prevent or stop unlawful activities by issuing citations or making arrests.
- Responds to calls involving domestic disputes, rescue efforts, accident scenes, potential criminal activity and determines the appropriate course of action.
- Operates a radar unit to monitor traffic speeds; issues warnings or summons as appropriate.
- Responds to calls involving disturbances of the peace, bank and burglar alarms, and fire scenes.
- Prepares various records and reports to document all shift activities.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
- Basic knowledge of law enforcement practices, methods, procedures and standards.
- Working knowledge of the use and care of firearms and weapons.
- Basic knowledge of arrest, rules of evidence and court procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, other law enforcement and public safety personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to perform heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 100 pounds; the ability to stand, walk, run, bend, twist, push, pull, sit, ride and perform similar body movements; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate various police equipment, firearms and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone or two-way radio; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- US Citizen
- Able to obtain Montana Driver’s License
- Height and Weight in Proportion
- Ability to pass color vision test
- No convictions for which imprisonment could have occurred in a federal or state penitentiary
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to achieve Montana POST Equivalency certification within one year of date of hire.
- Ability to qualify with specific duty Weapons
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
- Ability to handle interpersonal situations and have problem-solving skills
- Willingness to serve the community
