Telecommunicator

General Duties:

This is a public servant job based on public trust, competency and credibility. It is a critical requirement of this position that the applicant has the desire and ability to perform and behave )on duty as well as off duty) in a manner that does not cause damage or endanger the loss of trust and credibility with the public, the court systems, co-workers, or other law enforcement and public safety agencies.

The applicant must have a cognitive ability and desire to understand and interpret organizational rules policies and practices in a manner that solves problems while at the same time promotes this organizations public image and mission. The applicant must also be able to interact comfortably, lawfully, efficiently and often quickly with a wide variety of citizens and citizen’s groups who may have a municipality of problems and have need for emergency services such as Emergency Medical Services, Fire Services and/or Law Enforcement.

This position is responsible for operating as a 9-1-1 Operator, Fire and EMS dispatcher as well as Law Enforcement Dispatcher. Applicants must exhibit a customer service oriented personality, work efficiently on computer based applications, have good organizational skills, accurate grammar and typing skills, be a team player and have an exceptional ability to multi-task. This position requires strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a stressful environment while maintaining good judgment following policy and procedures. Applicants must be able to obtain LEADS/NCIC Certification, CPR Certification and Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification.

Salary:

Effective 01/01/2023 the starting hourly rate is $20.38 per hour.  After 5 steps, given annually, the ending hourly rate is $26.91.

About the Clark County Sheriff’s Office

Clark County is comprised of 403 square miles with a population of 133,000. We have an open application process and typically hire 5-7 deputies per year. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office handles approximately 40,000 law enforcement calls for service annually. Our average jail population is approximately 220 inmates.  Clark County is home to Wittenberg University and Clark State Community College, as well as several state and local parks, recreational waterways, bike pathway system, art, business and manufacturer centers and open green spaces.  Springfield is the county seat of Clark County and plays host to the Champion City Kings prospect league team.  

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office employs approximately 150 sworn deputies, 30 Communication Operators and 12 civilians. The Office is comprised of four divisions; Criminal Investigations, Uniform Patrol, Jail and Professional Standards. Each division is managed by a division Lieutenant. Three Majors oversee operations of the department with oversight from the Chief Deputy and the elected Sheriff. First line personnel report directly to a Sergeant.   All new deputies begin their career assigned to the Jail for at a minimum of one year during which time they are on probationary status. The Fraternal Order of Police is affiliated with agency personnel for contract and labor related matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be a resident of Clark County or adjoining county, within one year from date of employment
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid state drivers license
  • Have a high-school diploma or GED
  • Never been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or is currently not under indictment for any criminal offense
  • Have no current or previous charge or conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the last 5 years
  • Never been convicted of any family offense of violence
