Job Announcement

The Brandon Police Department is looking for the right candidate to serve as a School Resource Officer (rank of Detective) for the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union (RNESU). The right candidate will possess a service mindset and uphold our community values.

 

Position:  SRO- Detective                                         

Pay Range: $50,937.60 ($26.53 per hour-Union Step 4)

 

Requirements:

Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, tools, techniques, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and the court system.
  •  
  • Knowledge of criminal investigatory practices and methods.
  •  
  • Knowledge of arrest, rules of evidence and court procedures
  •  
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  •  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, public officials, attorneys, and the general public.
  •  
  • Ability to cope with a variety of crisis and non-crisis situations firmly, tactfully and with respect for the rights of citizens.
  •  
  • Ability to be certified to perform emergency first aid, CPR, rescue, and recovery.
  •  
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and various software applications.

 

Education and Experience:

 Vermont Criminal Justice Council Level III Certification or lateral transfer from another state that is eligible for a certification waiver.

Must have at least 3 years of general law enforcement experience.

College Degree preferred (Associates, Bachelors, or Masters).

  • Experience as an SRO and/or experience in working with children in a law enforcement or educational setting is preferred.

 

Licensing Requirements:

 VCJTC Level III Certification.

  • Valid Vermont Driver's License (at time of hire).

 

Responsibilities:

Primary objective will be to work with the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union to develop a safe and secure area for school children and staff to conduct their day-to-day school activities, as well as building strong relationships and rapport with all children, teachers, administration, staff, and fellow SRO’s and agencies.                  

Performs required law enforcement services in compliance with laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures on behalf of the Brandon Police Department.

  • Patrol school grounds and perform traffic control when needed.
  •  
  • Responds to calls and complaints regarding suspected criminal activity; apprehends and/or seeks the prosecution of offenders of local, state, and federal statutes.
  •  
  • Works with the court system, attorneys, and other law enforcement personnel; contacts various agencies to obtain and verify information.
  •  
  • Investigates traffic accidents; writes accident reports; enforce traffic laws.
  •  
  • Conducts thorough investigations of both criminal and civil acts, and missing people to the best of their ability.
  •  
  • Prepares reports on crimes, arrests, or incidents; works with prosecuting attorneys; testifies in formal court proceedings.
  •  
  • Prepares various records and data for court processing.
  •  
  • Provides information to the public regarding various topics.
  •  
  • Performs related work and any other duties as required by the Police Chief.
  •  
  • When school is on summer break, acts in the capacity of a detective assigned to deal with juvenile crime and/or issues that occur in the Town of Brandon.
  •  
  • Although primarily assigned to the Otter Valley Union Middle/High School (Brandon), the SRO may also be called on to deal with law enforcement matters at other RNESU schools.
