DENVILLE TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT
IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR

POLICE OFFICER

All applications and documents must be submitted online through PoliceApp.  No applications or information should be dropped off or mailed to the Denville Township Police Department.  All submissions are required to be completed online.

 

The Denville Township Police Department is actively seeking professional, qualified and energetic applicants who possess the department’s core values of honesty, integrity, fairness, compassion, and respect for the position of Police Officer.  Applications are being accepted from PTC certified (successfully completed the Basic Course for Police Officers at a NJ Police Academy) and non-PTC certified applicants.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

SALARY

Police Officers in Denville are entitled to a competitive starting salary of $45,675, with a top pay of $125,799 after 9 years of service. Other benefits include health insurance, enrollment into the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System, and a tuition reimbursement program aimed at the professional development of our employees. Assignment opportunities available during your career include patrol officer, community services officer, traffic officer, school resource officer, detective, and other specialized assignments such as the Morris County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team or a police academy instructor. These benefits are in addition to working for one of the most progressive law enforcement agencies in the State of New Jersey.

 

ABOUT DENVILLE TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Denville Township Police Department is currently comprised of 34 sworn police officers, 6 Class III officers, and 12 civilian employees including dispatchers, animal control officers and records clerks. The township has a residential population of approximately 16,000 residents and covers approximately 14 square miles in the center of Morris County. This geographical location is what gives Denville the nickname “The Hub of Morris County”.   Denville Township has 7 schools (including 3 regional high schools), a hospital and is bisected by Routes 80, 46 and 10. Denville has a mix of residential and business areas and our town center is often recognized as one of the best in New Jersey for shopping and dining.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must not be less than 18 years old nor more than 35 years old at time of appointment (age restrictions shall not conflict with the current state and federal law).

Applicants must be of sound body, good moral character, and in good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS) of New Jersey as to the eligibility for membership in the retirement system.

Applicants must possess a minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, with preference provided to applicants who have a B.A./B.S. degree.  * Military service cannot be substituted for college credits.

Applicants must be a citizen of the United States and a legal resident of the State of New Jersey at time of appointment.

Applicants must possess a valid New Jersey Driver License at time of appointment.

Applicants must not have been convicted of any crime of the first, second, third or fourth degree, as designated by the Criminal Code of New Jersey, or a crime or felony offense in any other jurisdiction that involved moral turpitude, or is undergoing or awaiting court action of any kind in regard to such a crime or felony offense at the time of application.

 

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must successfully complete a physical agility test (standards and wavier are located at the top of this page under the apply now button).

Applicants must pass an entry level police officer exam administered by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.  * Applicants who are currently PTC certified or attending a PTC approved New Jersey police academy will be waived from the written test requirement and proceed directly to the next phase of the hiring process.

Testing dates are as follows.  There will be no make ups.  Mark your calendars accordingly.  There will be no refunds if you are unable to make the dates for any reason.

Time: Each qualified applicant will be scheduled to attend at an assigned time.

Important Note: You must print the Physical Agility Wavier and have it signed by your doctor.  This waiver MUST be presented at the time of the physical agility test. Without the waiver, you will not be allowed to participate.

Study guides for the written exam will be handed out the morning of the physical agility test to those who pass the physical test.

 

HIRING PROCESS

The hiring process shall consist of all of the following:

Physical Agility Test

Written Examination (waived for eligible candidates as noted above)

Interviews with various members of the Denville Township Police Department

Extensive Background Investigation

Psychological Examination

Medical Examination

Drug Testing

Successful applicant(s) who do not possess a PTC certificate will be sent for training to a New Jersey Police Training Commission Approved Police Academy.
