THE CITY OF CRANSTON ANNOUNCES AN OPEN COMPETITIVE CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION FOR
POLICE OFFICER
Starting Salary: $54,321

QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY
- Must be 18 years of age by October 1, 2023
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a valid and authorized Immigration & Naturalization citizenship in the U.S.
- Must have good communication skills, be self-motivated, and be able to multi-task during stressful situations
- Must demonstrate a history of good work ethic
- Be of good health, moral character and habits, and sound in emotion and mind
- Individuals with felony criminal convictions (including those expunged) will be removed from consideration.
- Individuals with misdemeanor criminal convictions (including those expunged) may be removed from consideration depending on the facts and circumstances.
- Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence will be disqualified per Federal Law (18 S.C. 922 (g) (9).
- Driving history will be considered and may disqualify some applicants
- Persons with a driving history that includes "driving while impaired" or similar charges will be removed
- Must not test positive for a substance that is classified as illegal without a prescription in the State of Rhode Island
PROCESS
Applicants must complete an application on PoliceApp.com (www.policeapp.com) then register on Fit2Serve (www.fit2serve.com/testing) for the agility test as well as written test by October 1, 2023. Once registered with Fit2Serve, the testing process and any further participation requirements will be explained. In addition, you must complete the attached preliminary Cranston Police background packet and attach it to this application along with a passport style photo by October 6, 2023.
Government issued photo identification is required at each phase of this hiring process. Failure to produce proper identification will disqualify applicants.
- PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST
The Physical Agility Test is conducted in accordance with the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy standards and will be administered by Fit2Serve. Please refer to the agility test standards which can be found at https://rimpa.ri.gov/basicrecruitment/requirements.php and attached to this job announcement. The Fit2Serve cost for the physical agility test is $100. Those in need of financial assistance for testing, please contact Captain Ricci at (401) 477-5092 or email cricci@cranstonpoliceri.com.
If you passed a Fit2Serve agility after October 1, 2022 then you may attach the passing certified physical assessment certificate to your application on PoliceApp.com and are exempt from participating in this physical agility test for the 2023 hiring process. All others must attend and pass an agility test on one of the following dates:
June 10, 2023 - West Warwick Civic Center located at 100 Factory St in West Warwick, RI
July 22, 2023 - Cranston High School West track located at 80 Metropolitan Ave in Cranston, RI
August 26, 2023 - Cranston High School West track located at 80 Metropolitan Ave in Cranston, RI
September 23, 2023 - West Warwick Civic Center located at 100 Factory St in West Warwick, RI
Failure to pass this phase will remove applicants from the hiring process.
- WRITTEN EXAM
The Fit2Serve cost for the written exam is $75. Applicants can take the written exam at any location using a computer with internet access and a camera attached. The exam will be administered online by Fit2Serve on the following dates:
June 9, 10, 11, 2023
July 21, 22, 23, 2023
August 25, 26, 27, 2023

If you passed a Fit2Serve written test after October 1, 2021 then you may attach the passing certified written exam certificate to your application on PoliceApp.com and are exempt from taking this written exam for the 2023 hiring process. All others must pass a written exam on one of the listed dates.
Applicants must score a minimum of 70 to remain in consideration. Failure to pass this phase will remove applicants from the hiring process.
- SWIM TEST
Applicants who pass the physical agility test and written exam will need to perform a swim test consisting of swimming continuously for 200 yards; swimming underwater for 30 yards; diving to the bottom of the pool then returning to the surface and treading water for 10 minutes. The dates are scheduled to be October 4 & 5, 2023 at 5:30pm. Your exact date will be emailed to you after applications close. A swim test waiver must be completed and notarized then brought to the swim test.
Failure to pass this phase will remove applicants from the hiring process.
- INTERVIEWS
Applicants who successfully complete the swim test will be interviewed during the week of October 9-13 2023 from 8am to 5pm. Your exact date & time will be determined after the swim test.
